The shaft is treated, polished rosewood. A hand-sewn leather protector is included.

The utensil is thin and made for slicing, whilst a wood chipping wood splitter has a wedge-shaped utensil to withstand the impact. The elongated parts of the utensil are especially vulnerable for heavy impacts since they have no "backing". They are there to minimize weight and increase the slicing edge.
